Y cuarenta días fue tentado por el diablo, y en esos días no comió nada, y cuando terminaron, tuvo hambre. San Lucas 4,2

Pensamiento, comentario, reflexión: Siendo cuarenta días tentados por el diablo, las versiones en latín, sirio, persa y etíope de la Vulgata leen la frase "cuarenta días", en relación con la última parte del verso anterior; según el sentido, que Jesús fue guiado por el Espíritu cuarenta días en el desierto, antes de ser tentado por Satanás,

y para eso: pero nuestra lectura es confirmada por Marcos 1,13, quien afirma, como aquí, que Satanás lo tentó durante tanto tiempo; cómo puede ser invisible y, por sugerencias internas, antes de que aparezca visiblemente y lo ataque abiertamente, con las siguientes tentaciones. La versión etíope agrega: "y cuarenta noches": y estos fueron los días en que Cristo estuvo en el desierto, y ayunó y fue tentado allí: fueron las noches incluidas, así como los días; vea Mateo 4,2 y en aquellos días no comió nada, ni ningún tipo de comida; no probó ningún tipo de comestible o bebible durante todo el espacio de cuarenta días; ni en las noches en que los judíos permitían a la gente comer en tiempos de ayuno; Ver Gill en Mateo 4: 2. Y toda esta abstinencia, como lo demuestra el poder de Cristo en sostener su naturaleza humana, sin comida, durante ese tiempo, y las desventajas bajo las cuales, como hombre, luchó con Satanás; para que este ayuno nunca fue diseñado como un ejemplo para sus seguidores y para ser imitado por ellos:

Y cuando terminaron; los cuarenta días y cuarenta noches;

Entonces tuvo hambre; lo que no ha hecho antes; y eso muestra la verdad de su naturaleza humana; y se menciona para observar la ocasión de la siguiente tentación y la ventaja en el lado tentador.

En resumen: Observe aquí cómo el poder divino sostuvo la naturaleza humana de Cristo sin comida. Lo que Moisés hizo al dar la ley, Cristo lo hace al comienzo del evangelio, a saber, ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. Cristo por la presente pretendía nuestra admiración, no nuestra imitación; o si nuestra imitación, solo de acción, no de tiempo.

De este ejemplo de Cristo, aprendemos que es nuestro deber, a través del ayuno y la oración, prepararnos para el conflicto con nuestros enemigos espirituales. Como Cristo estaba ayunando para tratar con el tentador, nosotros también deberíamos hacerlo.

And forty days he was tempted by the devil, and in those days he ate nothing, and when they finished, he was hungry. Saint Luke 4.2

Thought, comment, reflection: Being forty days tempted by the devil, the Latin, Syrian, Persian and Ethiopian versions of the Vulgate read the phrase "forty days", in relation to the last part of the previous verse; according to the sense that Jesus was led by the Spirit forty days in the desert, before being tempted by Satan,

And for that: but our reading is confirmed by Mark 1,13, who affirms, as here, that Satan tempted him for so long; how it can be invisible and, by internal suggestions, before it appears visibly and attacks it openly, with the following temptations. The Ethiopian version adds: "and forty nights": and these were the days when Christ was in the desert, and he fasted and was tempted there: they were the included nights, as well as the days; See Matthew 4,2 and in those days he did not eat anything, nor any type of food; did not taste any type of food or drink during the entire forty days; nor on the nights when the Jews allowed people to eat in fasting times; See Gill in Matthew 4: 2. And all this abstinence, as evidenced by the power of Christ to sustain his human nature, without food, during that time, and the disadvantages under which, as a man, he wrestled with Satan; So this fast was never designed as an example for his followers and to be imitated by them:

And when they finished; the forty days and forty nights;

Then he was hungry; what you have not done before; and that shows the truth of his human nature; and it is mentioned to observe the occasion of the next temptation and the advantage on the tempting side.

In summary: Notice here how the divine power sustained the human nature of Christ without food. What Moses did in giving the law, Christ does at the beginning of the gospel, namely, fasting forty days and forty nights. Christ hereby intended our admiration, not our imitation; or if our imitation, only of action, not of time.

From this example of Christ, we learn that it is our duty, through fasting and prayer, to prepare for conflict with our spiritual enemies. Since Christ was fasting to deal with the tempter, we should also do so.
